  How Global Warming Affects Penguins

On an Antarctic Island the number of Rockhopper penguins has dropped from 1.7 million to 100,000 since the 1940’s. The majority of people say that global warming is the cause.

Most penguins get killed by: Decline in ice algae causes break in food chain, blocks in usual forage paths, destruction of nests, glacier calving, and heavier snows.

Effects of Ice Melting:

Penguins losing their home, their food source’s habitat are losing their home, temperature is getting to warm for the penguins.

Krill numbers may have dropped by as much as 80% since the 1970's - so today's stocks are a mere 1/5th of what they were only 30 years ago. The decline in krill may in turn account for the decline in the numbers of some penguin species.

          Ways We Can Save Penguins

These are things that need to stop:

This is what it will look like in 2012 (estimated) all around Antarctica if we don't stop

global warming.

      Fun Facts

I was told that because of global warming a 16 mile long piece of Antarctica broke off of Antartica. Over 300 penguins were on the piece and later on got killed.

Experts say that 50% of the penguins get killed by global warming, 25% get killed by their predators, and 25% of them die on their own.

The Magellanic penguin is also known as the Jackass Penguin.
